Hello and welcome to London TV with me Lydia Kimmerling stay tuned for something your mummy might be interested in.
After over thirty years the return of Tutankhamun and his treasures arrives in London with the anticipation it deserves. London born Howard Carter the archaeologist who discovered the tomb famously said that ‘the details of the room slowly emerged from the mist, strange animals, statues, and gold - everywhere the glint of gold." And that quote is just as relevant 85 years later to describe the magic and mystery in this exhibition, Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs…
It is wonderful to bring this exhibition back to London. In 1972, a version of this exhibition was at the British Museum. The exhibition that travelled in the 70’s had 55 objects from Tutankhamun’s tomb. This exhibition has 50. Before you see those, you see 80 other objects from ancient tombs, the kings, the queens, the pharaohs that proceeded Tutankhamun to the throne. When you first walk in the exhibit you’ll see these treasures from other tombs, leading you up to the treasures of Tutankhamun like in this great gallery. You’re not just looking at the pieces because of their beauty, but you’re looking at them also as pieces from everyday life that add a real human touch to a real person named Tutankhamun. The final gallery of the exhibition features 9 objects that were actually wrapped on the mummy of Tutankhamun. A dagger, a uraeus that went on the top of the head, 2 collars and the one that’s one of my favorites, this crown that sat right on the head of the mummy. So to be in London where ancient Egypt is so appreciated, it’s exciting for all of us and I hope its exciting for London.
This must see exhibition is open at the O2 Centre now until the 30th of August. Standard adult tickets start at £15 and the nearest tube is North Greenwich.
